There are several physical requirements for scuba diving, you should have including:

  • In general, you should have good health and medical fitness.
  • You must have 10 years old (for having PADI Junior Open Water Diver Certification) or more.
  • You can swim or at least be comfortable with water.
  • You mustn’t have any medical condition that is contraindicated  for scuba diving, such as:
    • Heart conditions, for instance, heart attacks, angina or uncontrolled high pressure.
    • Seizure or epilepsy disorders.
    • Mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression.
    • Respiratory related conditions, like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
    • Neurological conditions, for instance, stroke and paralysis.
    • Sinus, ear and Inner air conditions.
    • Vision impairments, for example, color blindness and near-sightedness.
    • Diabetes that requires regular insulin treatment.
    • Pregnancy.
    • If you have a recent surgery, you can’t dive.

It is important to take into account that the previous guidelines are general guidelines, as the final decision on the fitness of a diver is up to a doctor who has knowledge of diving medicine, in addition, some diving organizations have other requirements and restrictions.

Speaking of scuba diving, there are certain age restrictions. These restrictions vary according to several factors such as, the certification agency you chose, the location you will dive in and the type of dive. Generally, children who are at least 8 years old can start scuba diving under the supervision of a qualified scuba instructor.

However, most international diving organizations only give a scuba diving certification to at least 10 years old divers. At the age of 10, children can start scuba diving to get more experience to become a certified diver themselves.

On the other hand, scuba diving for adults has no upper age limit, but for the sake of safety, adults who are more than 50 years old must undergo a physical examination first to make sure that they are fit enough to dive.

This is also so important for older divers, they become more susceptible to some medical conditions Which can negatively affect their ability to safely dive and it is also possible that their body changes from their previous dive.

Every certification agency has its own age restriction which may vary slightly from other agencies. The most popular ones are (PADI) which is an appreciation for the professional Association of Diving Instructors and (NAUI) which is an acronym of the National Association of Underwater Instructors:

  • For (PADI), 8 years old is the minimum age at which your child can start learning scuba diving. 8-year-children can enroll the Bubble maker program from PADI, in which they can learn the basic scuba diving skills in a safe and controlled environment.Although, to obtain the PADI certification, 10-year-children and older ones must pass the Junior Open Water Course.
  • To start learning scuba diving with NAUI, a 10 year-old child can enroll in the Junior Scuba Diver program from NAUI and basic scuba diving skills in addition to safety procedures. Speaking of requirements, 14-year-old children or older must finish an Open Water Diver course to obtain the certification.
